← The Dementia Journey

Module 5 · You can pause anytime

Take a moment

Put both feet on the floor.

Relax your shoulders.

Take one slow breath in… and let it out even slower.

Say to yourself: “I am doing something difficult.”

Continue when you’re ready. There is no hurry.

Get help now

Someone is in immediate danger, or this is a medical emergency

Call 911 right away. This includes signs of stroke, chest pain, trouble breathing, a serious fall, unresponsiveness, or a missing person in danger.

A sudden or concerning change in your loved one

Contact their healthcare provider. Sudden confusion can come from infection, dehydration, pain, constipation, or a medication effect, not just dementia.

You are in emotional crisis, or having thoughts of harming yourself

Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It is free and open 24/7. Caregivers use it too.

You suspect abuse, neglect, or exploitation

Contact your local Adult Protective Services. In Missouri: (800) 392-0210.

You need caregiver support and local resources

Your local Area Agency on Aging can connect you with respite, support groups, and services. The Alzheimer’s Association helpline is (800) 272-3900, 24/7.
